The Safety Bay Classic long distance was to be a very different race with the onshore wind's forcing the race's director's
to change the down wind course to a giant figure 8 course back and forward arrows the bay 4 time's give a race distance of 24km.
The race was started with a full fleet boat start 200m off the shore and it was Robbie Radis (Neilpryde/Kinetic) shooting straight into the lead followed by Claude Lecoq (Arrows/Fanatic) with Kevin Netto (Neilpryde/F2) in third. Radis pulled out a 250m lead as he came into the first jibe mark followed by Lecoq. By the next mark Radis had pulled out a 350m lead over Lecoq with Chris Lockwood (Servene/Carbon Art) moving up into third place after a bad start and putting pressure on Lecoq. By the third and final jibe mark Radis had increased his lead to 400m, Lockwood was now all over Lecoq as they rounded the final mark. The next 4km had Lecoq and Lockwood battled it out for 2nd place and both started to gain on Radis as he seem to have backed off a little. 1km from the finish Lockwood made his move coming over the top of Locqu taking 2nd place. "I'm really happy to take out this race, it's the first long-distance I have done in over a year after taking last season off. My equipment is working really well for me, really easy to sail with great top end speed. This season has gone really well for me so far, I didn't know how I would go after taking a year off. It's been a dream start to the season for me."
